Chopta Tungnath Trek

Chopta is a picturesque hill station located in Uttarakhand, India. Often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” it’s part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and is known for its stunning landscapes, lush green meadows, and snow-capped peaks. Chopta offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, including the Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba peaks. The lush green meadows and dense forests add to its charm.

The region is home to various species of flora and fauna. In the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, one might spot animals like the Himalayan Monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand), as well as other wildlife. Chopta has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Summers are mild, winters can be chilly with snowfall, and the monsoon season brings lush greenery.
Chopta is a base for several trekking routes. The scenic trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila starts from here. One can also explore the nearby Deoria Tal, a serene lake surrounded by dense forests.

Tungnath Temple is a renowned destination located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is famous for being an ancient Shiva temple surrounded by stunning natural beauty. It is one of the shrines among Panch Kedar circuit. It is believed to have been built by Pandavas during their stay in the Himalayas. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Shivling is worshipped in the form of ‘arms of God’. It is the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at an altitude of about 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). The temple has traditional Himalayan architecture with intricate wooden carvings and a beautiful stone structure.

The weather at 12,000 feet is harsh during winters, with heavy snowfall and temperatures dropping below freezing. The region is often covered in snow from late December to March. Hence the temple remains closed during the six months of the winter season, but the trek is open round the year.

The trek to Tungnath from Chopta is a moderate climb, approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) one way. It is accessible to most trekkers with basic fitness levels. The trek takes you through beautiful alpine meadows and dense forests. The region is adorned with a variety of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Close to Tungnath, there is Chandrashila (meaning “Moon Rock”), which is the highest point in the region at around 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). It holds religious and spiritual significance in the history of the Himalayas, as Lord Rama meditated here after killing Ravana. Another legend describes that Moon-God Chandra did penance at this place. Thus, the peak is referred to as Chandrashila after the name of God Chandra.

The trek to Chandrashila from Tungnath is popular for its panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. The trek offers a breathtaking experience with vistas of snow-capped peaks and lush landscapes. From Tungnath, the trek to Chandrashila is an additional 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) and offers spectacular views. It is more challenging due to the altitude. The views from both Tungnath and Chandrashila are simply stunning, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and valleys.

Deoria Tal, also spelled Devaria Tal, is a beautiful alpine lake located in Uttarakhand, India. It is situated at an altitude of about 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level and is known for its serene surroundings and reflective waters. The starting point of all the treks is Chopta, which is accessible by road. The nearest town to Chopta is Ukhimath, which is connected by road to major cities like Rishikesh and Haridwar.

Day 1 – Rishikesh to Chopta

Drive from Rishikesh to Chopta. Night stay at Chopta.

Day 2 – Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila peak

Tungnath-Chandrashila trek from Chopta. Night stay at Chopta.

Day 3 – Chopta to Sari and Trek to Deoria Tal

Drive from Chopta to Sari Village. From Sari Village, embark on a trek to Deoria Tal. Drive back to Delhi.
Day Four: Reach Delhi.
