Do Dham Uttarakhand

Kedarnath Dham and Badrinath Dham are the two main shrines of Char Dham of Uttarakhand. The Kedarnath temple is also a part of the Jotirling religious circuit of India and the Panch Kedar circuit of Uttarakhand. Badrinath temple is among the Char Dham circuit of India and a major shrine of the Panch Badri circuit of Uttarakhand. Both temples are situated in the Garhwal Himalayan region of Uttarakhand state.

Kedarnath is in the Rudraprayag district on the banks of the Mandakini River. The temple is devoted to Bhagwaan Shankar. A legend describes that Pandavaas constructed the Kedarnath shrine during their stay in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. Hindu scriptures mention Uttarakhand as heaven because Shiv Shankar resides here. The Kedarnath Dham is closed annually for approximately six months during the winter. The closing ceremony of Kedarnath Shrine is held a day after the Diwali festival, which falls in October or November. The date for the opening ceremony is declared on the day of the Mahashivratri festival. The temple’s opening ceremony is usually held in April or May every year.

Badrinath shrine is lodged between Nar and Narayan peaks in the the Chamoli district of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The Badrinath shrine is beautifully located in front of Nilkhanth Peak and the nearby Vishnuganga River. The temple is devoted to Shri Hari Vishnu, who is seen sitting in his Yog Dhyan Mudra at the shrine. Adiguru Shankaracharya established Badrinath Dham. Since then, the main priest of the Dham has been from the Nambudiri caste of Kerala. Like the Kedarnath shrine, Badrinath Dham also closed for six months due to the harsh winter. It is closed every year during November. The opening date of Badrinath temple is announced on the auspicious day of the Basant Panchmi festival every year. The Dham is then opened on the same date announced, usually in April or May.

The sacred journey of Do Dham starts from Haridwar via Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Srinagar. Devotees first visit the Kedarnath Shrine via Guptkashi and then the Badrinath Dham via Joshimath town.
